  • Raja is an independent business and financial consultant based in Lebanon since 2010, working with companies across several countries and sectors but mostly financial institutions. Although his thrust is largely financial, Raja deals a lot with strategy, organisation, IT and operational improvement. He is deeply involved with the the new ecosystem created by BDL circular no. 331, working closely with the various VC funds, incubators, accelerators and private investors to help start-ups, early stage and more mature company benefit from the momentum. Raja is also GM and founder of a micro-credit institution in Lebanon (no. 5 on the BDL list of approved institutions) dispensing small loans to individuals and small companies. Previously he worked 10 years in the banking sector in Switzerland and before that, as a mechanical engineer in design, industry and project management. Raja holds Bachelor and Master degrees in Engineering from McGIll University as well as an MBA and a CFA. He is currently a member of the first Masterclass in Business Angels sponsored by IM Capital. Raja is 50 years old and the father of two university students. He is passionate about classical music, sailing and skiing.

  • Wael is a finance expert with more than 18 years of experience in numerous fields of finance like investment banking, private equity, venture capital, asset management, brokerage and financial consulting. He is the Founder and Managing Partner of Proficient Financials, a boutique advisory firm focusing on private equity and investment banking. During his work at Proficient Financials, Wael executed numerous advisory deals that involved strategy setting, valuation, and raising financing. He also teaches Advanced Corporate Finance at the American University of Beirut.
    Prior to establishing Proficient Financials, Wael helped launch Amana Capital, an online trading company, and was the Director of Finance and Strategy at the company. He was responsible for setting the strategy of the company and taking care of its finance department.
    At the same time, Wael acted as a Vice President at Manara Capital where he worked on several private equity deals in numerous industries ranging from financial services to food and beverage and real estate and consumer goods.
    Prior to joining Manara Capital, Wael initiated and led the Equity Research department at Bank Audi. There, he helped launch and manage the “Arabian Opportunities Fund”, Bank Audi’s first mutual fund covering the MENA region.
    Before that, Wael worked with Booz Allen Hamilton (Booz & co.) as an Associate in their Middle East offices on numerous assignments in different fields ranging from Financial Services to Oil & Energy and Transportation.
    In 1999, directly after completing his Bachelor degree, Wael joined Bank Audi and worked as a Relationship Manager in the Corporate Banking department for 4 years.

  • Bijan Azad, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor at the Olayan School of Business (OSB), American University of Beirut and the Director of Samih Darwazah Center for Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship. Bijan pioneered the popular Entrepreneurship Practicum graduate course at AUB (modeled after Steve Blank’s Lean LaunchPad at Stanford). In 2015 he designed AUB’s Scale-Up Readiness Program that focuses on scale up challenges of companies in $1-$5 million revenue range in the Middle East. The program combines just-in-time executive education with diagnosis of company scale-up readiness as well as coaching to overcome barriers to scaling up. This is the first program of its kind in the Middle East with twelve companies in Jordan which have already gone through the program and are implementing scaling strategies—6 firms have already raised $17 million in growth funding.
    Dr. Azad, in 1988 was co-founder of a successful map technology startup in Cambridge, Massachusetts, GIS/Trans (developed fast search for Dual Independent Map Encoding system, acquired by Etak Navigator, News Corp in 1992, later the technology was acquired by Keyhole, and by Google Maps) & in 2001 he co-founded another successful map technology startup ILIS bv (acquired by ARCADIS bv 2003), in Arnhem, Netherlands.
